I went to Las Vegas and I saw God

George Strait is known for many number one hit songs but the one that has been ringing true for me lately has been “I Saw God Today”.  In it he describes the many things in his day-to-day life that give him confidence of God and the ways in which he can be seen.

Within the past 3 weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to attend a beautiful wedding, a moving funeral and multiple church services.  I’ve sang everything from praise and worship music, to 70’s disco and 90’s gangster rap to singing that I was going to have the best f-ing night of my life.

Each of these moments and situations were able to show me some of God’s love for us in different ways.  Whether it be the uniting of two people, celebrating the life of someone taken from us or just singing for joy in multiple genres, I caught glimpses of the love that I believe God has for us all.

With that being said, it took a trip to Las Vegas for me to fully experience God’s love.  I was able to experience this both personally and as an on-looker and it was incredible.

To start my trip to Vegas, I was pleasantly surprised that a good friend who lives nearby but we just don’t connect often enough, was in fact going to Vegas to on a completely different conference.  Sometimes these coincidences seem a little to coincidental and the long conversation that we had was something I desperately needed, and I like to think helped him too.

It was the next day that God began to fully show himself.  I was at a conference with thousands of people who had the same goal; LGBTQ+ workplace equality and inclusion.

I have no idea how many of these individuals were Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, or any other of the world religions and it didn’t matter.  The love and the joy that I witnessed in this group as everyone was learning and fighting for a common goal was amazing.  People from more than 50 countries packed learning sessions to find out how they could do better in their companies and help to lift up their co-workers and future LGBTQ+ people who may join their organization.

There are far too many people in this world that would call themselves Christian or followers of Jesus and would condemn this group of people.  They’d spout one of six verses out of over 30,000 in a book to defend their bigotry and hatred.

I can tell you with all the sincerity in my heart that the love and kindness I witnessed in a group of LGBTQ+ business professionals and their Allies is greater than anything I’ve seen at any worship night.  I was welcomed with open arms and made some lifelong friendships all while learning about some of the privilege I’ve been able to enjoy without ever knowing it.

I saw God in Las Vegas and he was found in the eyes and the hearts of thousands of LGBTQ+ individuals whose commitment to love and inclusion was inspiring to the point of tears.

I encourage you to look for God in your life; she may show up where you’re not expecting to see her.
